My two sons, ages 16 and 12 were both identified in early elementary school. My first son was recommended for testing during his kindergarten readiness test (age 4) when he responded to a prompt to name a fast animal with "A protozoa." The woman looked confused, so he told her that they are microscopic animals that move so fast a special microscope is needed. Although they typically encourage boys with late August birthdays to wait another year, they accepted him. On some advice from other (and at the time I thought wiser and more experienced) parents, we waited until the end of first grade before we had him tested. His strange-but-accurate answer was the first time the school system recognized his TAGness, but his dad and I had already had 4 years of surprised looks from strangers and family members. To us though, it was just our kid being himself. The story of our second (and very different) son is one for another day.
